Bicycles and Scooters in RAK
Man, working in RAK for three years totally changed how I think about cycling in the UAE. I used to think biking here meant death by traffic, but this northern emirate has these absolutely gorgeous mountain roads and coastal paths that make every ride feel like an adventure movie. Started doing weekend rides along the corniche just to kill time, then noticed people actually biking to work between the port and city center. My buddy Khalid laughed at me for months before finally admitting he cycles daily from his place near RAK Mall to his cement factory job. Guy's saving like 1,400 dirhams monthly compared to taxi costs while getting ripped in the process.
The pricing situation here pleasantly surprised me after dealing with Dubai rental madness. Basic bike rentals start around 45-65 dirhams daily for anything decent. Electric scooters cost maybe 75-110 daily, but monthly packages drop to 700-1,000 depending on how fancy you want to go. My neighbor Abdullah went smart and bought his own electric bike for 2,400 dirhams after doing the math on four months of rentals. Most rental shops here cater to weekend warriors rather than daily commuters, which actually works better for trying different bike types.
What Actually Works Up North
After probably exploring every single road and path around RAK, here's what I've discovered. Mountain bikes are absolutely king here because you've got everything from smooth coastal cruising to those crazy mountain trails that head up toward Jebel Jais. Electric scooters work perfectly for getting around the city but good luck taking them up any serious inclines - learned that lesson the expensive way!
The corniche delivers some of the most beautiful flat cycling I've ever experienced. Ocean views, decent shade spots, and this constant breeze that keeps you cool. But those mountain roads? Absolutely incredible scenery that makes you forget you're exercising, though you definitely need to be in decent shape and carry proper safety gear because cell service gets spotty higher up.
Summer cycling up here means you're either out before 7 AM or you're basically volunteering to become mountain jerky. The asphalt gets so hot it'll melt your shoes if you stop too long. Winter though is absolutely perfect - cool mountain breezes, clear skies, comfortable temperatures all day. Just always carry way more water than you think you need because getting stuck between the city and mountain areas in RAK heat is not a situation you want to experience firsthand!
