Bicycles and Scooters in Abu Dhabi
So I've been living in Abu Dhabi for six years now, and honestly, the whole cycling thing here was a total surprise. First year I'm thinking "bikes in this heat? Are you insane?" Then one random Friday morning I'm walking along Corniche and see all these people actually enjoying bike rides. Curiosity got the better of me, so I grabbed a rental from this little shop near the marina. Three hours later I'm completely hooked! Now my colleague Ahmed commutes daily on his electric scooter from Khalifa City to downtown, laughing at the rest of us stuck in traffic jams while saving like 1,500 dirhams monthly.
The pricing situation caught me off guard too. Basic bike rentals run about 50-80 dirhams daily for anything decent. Those electric scooters everyone's buzzing about cost 80-120 daily, but monthly packages drop to maybe 800-1,200 depending on how fancy you want to get. My neighbor Hassan did the math and bought his own electric bike for 2,800 dirhams after realizing six months of rentals would cost more than just owning one. Those Bird and Lime scooters you see scattered around downtown? About 3 dirhams to unlock plus whatever time you spend riding.
What Actually Works Around Here
After trying basically everything on two wheels, here's what I discovered. Basic mountain bikes handle Abu Dhabi perfectly fine once you know the routes. Electric scooters are fantastic for quick trips but honestly struggle when summer heat kicks in - the batteries drain faster and you're melting anyway. The Corniche bike path goes on forever with decent shade spots and water fountains that actually work.
Summer cycling means you're either out before 8 AM or after 6 PM, period. I learned this lesson the expensive way when I nearly passed out biking to Yas Mall at 2 PM in July. Winter though? Absolutely perfect weather for cycling all day long. Just plan your routes using those dedicated bike paths whenever possible because sharing roads with Dubai-bound traffic isn't exactly relaxing!
