Bicycles and Scooters in Dubai

Five years in Dubai taught me that cycling here is basically extreme sports disguised as transportation. Started with this crazy idea of biking to work from Marina to Downtown, nearly got flattened by a bus on Sheikh Zayed Road within the first week. Then my colleague Rashid showed me the secret network of bike paths and quiet residential routes that actually make cycling survivable. Now I see people commuting daily on electric scooters through JLT and Business Bay, somehow navigating the traffic chaos while saving serious money on transport costs.

Price-wise, Dubai being Dubai means everything costs more. Basic bike rentals start around 60-100 dirhams daily for anything remotely decent. Electric scooters run 100-150 daily, while monthly e-scooter packages hit 1,200-2,000 dirhams depending on brand and battery life. My neighbor bought his own electric bike for 4,500 dirhams after calculating that six months of rentals would exceed purchase price. Those Lime and Bird scooters scattered everywhere cost about 5 dirhams to unlock plus time charges that add up fast.

What Survives Dubai Streets

After trying every possible cycling option, here's what actually works. Electric bikes handle Dubai's sprawling distances best, though battery life suffers in summer heat. The cycle tracks along JBR and Marina offer decent infrastructure but get crowded with tourists. Business Bay has surprisingly good bike lanes during off-peak hours.

Summer cycling means dawn or dusk only unless you enjoy becoming pavement pizza. Winter provides perfect conditions but traffic remains consistently terrifying year-round. Always wear bright colors and assume every driver wants to kill you because honestly, they might not see you coming!
