Letting go of our trusty Komatsu PC 220-7 – the 22.7-tonne workhorse that's dug more foundations than I can count. Not the prettiest girl at the dance anymore, but she's got heart where it counts. The hydraulics don't leak, tracks are decent, and the undercarriage isn't hiding any nasty surprises. Our specialist reckons the engine's got that sweet spot sound – not too rough, not too quiet. You know what I mean if you've been around these machines long enough. The cab shows its age but stays dry when it rains, and all the gauges actually work. The advantage with these older Komatsus is they're built simple – less computer nonsense to go wrong. Sure, doesn't have the fancy bells and whistles of newer special machinery, but also doesn't need a tech with a laptop every time it hiccups.
